Firstly, Michael was always available when I needed him. He helped me with a complicated situation that involved the courts and a false allegation directed towards me and my family.
Secondly, as a newbie to the court system, Michael was very thorough and diligently guided me through the process. This provided me with much needed calmness and reassurance.
Thirdly, even though there was a lot of information to comb through and understand, Michael was patient and believed in me. I felt like he was in my corner and I trusted him. His approach to my situation involved clarity, honesty and most of all my best interests. He based his analysis on facts and evidence and was able to help me and my family separate out the emotions. He communicated very clearly and prepared me for different kinds of scenarios and outcomes. His detailed analysis, thoroughness and attention to detail was very reassuring to me. I felt very confident going into our court date.
Michael’s vast experience, knowledge of the law and expertise was instrumental in the handling of my case. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs someone to really stand up for them.Response from the ownerArray

Q&A
My spouse is telling me I must move out of our home. Do I have to?
Answer from the ownerNo. You do not have to move out. Unless and until your spouse gets a court order granting him or her exclusive possession of the home, you have the same right to live in the house as he or she does. Please call Michael Craven to discuss your case with you.
Will my spouse be required to keep me on his/her health insurance after our divorce?
Answer from the ownerIf you or your spouse is covered under the other’s health insurance coverage, it will terminate when you are divorced. You may obtain a continuation of the coverage under a federal law commonly referred to as COBRA. There is a time limit for how long you are eligible for COBRA coverage, but under no circumstance does it exceed 36 months. Please call Michael Craven to discuss your case.
Does alimony still exist?
Answer from the ownerYes, but it is known as maintenance in Illinois. There are various factors for courts to consider when determining if someone is entitled to maintenance. There are many types and forms of maintenance and other factors that are very fact dependent. Always consult a divorce attorney about these many nuances. Please contact Michael Craven to discuss your case with you.
Should I cancel my spouse's health insurance when I file for divorce?
Answer from the ownerIn most cases, you should not cancel your spouse’s health insurance if they are covered by your plan. If you terminated your spouse’s insurance before you are divorced and a medical expense is incurred, it will likely be considered a marital obligation that you can be held responsible for. Please contact Michael Craven to discuss your case with you.
If I do move out, do I lose my rights to the home?
Answer from the ownerNo. Your right to ownership and right to possession of the home are separate. If you move out, your right to an equitable share of the home remains an issue to be resolved in your case. Please contact Michael Craven to discuss your case.
Does it matter who files first?
Answer from the ownerSometimes there is an advantage to filing first. However, in most cases, who files first will not have a major impact on the outcome of the case. Please contact Michael Craven to discuss your case with you.
Can I date before the divorce is final?
Answer from the ownerLaurie, as a reminder I mentioned in an earlier reply that you may want to reach out to me directly by phone to explore your various questions. I think a call will be a more efficient way to handle your questions.
Can a child decide which parent he or she will live with at a certain age?
Answer from the ownerNo. A minor child (a child who has not attained age 18) cannot decide which parent he or she will live with. However, the wishes of a child is one of several factors a court must consider when determining with whom the child will live with. As a general rule, the older the child, the more weight will be given to the child’s wishes. Please contact Michael Craven to discuss your case with you.
Does adultery affect who gets custody?
Answer from the ownerNo. These are separate issues with no legal connection. The law expressly states that a court shall not consider conduct of a present or proposed custodian for a child that does affect his or her relationship with the child. Please contact Michael Craven to discuss your case with you.
